In Ayurveda,
Nidra (sleep) is referred to as the "wet nurse of the world." When you are sick, or healing from trauma, or simply growing, the body demands sleep, because it is the only state where deep energetic repair can occur uninterrupted by the demands of waking life.
The Timing Matters More Than the Hours
Modern advice says "get 8 hours." Ayurveda says "get your hours *at the right time*."
The Ayurvedic clock divides the night into doshic phases:
- 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM (Kapha Time): The energy of the earth is heavy, slow, and dull. If you go to bed during this window, you ride the wave of Kapha directly into deep, heavy, uninterrupted sleep.
- 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM (Pitta Time): The energy shifts to fire and transformation. This is when the liver undergoes massive metabolic detoxification. If you are awake during this window, you will likely experience a "second wind," raid the fridge, and wake up exhausted. If you are deeply asleep by 10 PM, the Pitta energy is directed entirely toward internal healing instead of external action.
- 2:00 AM - 6:00 AM (Vata Time): The energy becomes light and active. Sleep during this final phase is often filled with dreams and REM cycles.
How to Cure Vata Insomnia
The most common type of insomnia is Vata insomnia: difficulty falling asleep due to a racing mind, or waking up at 3:00 AM and being unable to return to sleep.
The cure is grounding the nervous system through the feet and head.
Try This Today: Keep a small jar of sesame oil or plain sesame oil by your bed. Right before pulling up the covers, fiercely massage a few drops of oil into the soles of your feet for 2 minutes. Put on old socks. The heavy, warm oil pulls the frantic Vata energy down from the head to the feet, practically knocking you out.
