Modern neuroscience is currently obsessed with the "Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis"βthe revelation that the bacteria in your colon dictate your neurotransmitter production and emotional state.
In Ayurveda, this is fundamental protocol. The mind and the colon are intrinsically linked by the element of Air (Vata).
The Flow of Vata
Vata dosha is divided into five "sub-doshas" that govern movement in different parts of the body. The two most critical are:
1. Prana Vata: Located in the head. It governs the downward movement of thoughts, inhalation, and sensory perception.
2.
Apana Vata: Located in the pelvis and colon. It governs the downward movement of elimination (feces, urine, menstruation, childbirth).
The Traffic Jam
Health exists when Prana flows deeply downward and Apana flows smoothly downward and out.
But what happens when you are constipated? Apana Vata (the downward wind) hits a roadblock. Because air cannot be compressed indefinitely, it reverses direction. The wind of elimination travels violently *upward* (known as Udavarta).
It crashes into the stomach, causing bloating and gas. It crashes into the chest, causing palpitations and breathlessness. Finally, it crashes into the mind (Prana Vata), creating a chaotic tornado of racing, anxious, ungrounded thoughts.
Anxious, racing thoughts are often just constipation in disguise.
How to Fix the Gut-Brain Axis
If you have chronic anxiety, look to your bowel movements. Are they dry? Hard? Infrequent?
1. Lubricate the Colon: Vata is dry and cold. Treat it with warmth and oil. A teaspoon of ghee in warm milk before bed actively lubricates the colon wall.
2. Triphala: Take 1/2 tsp of Triphala steeped in warm water nightly to keep Apana flowing downward perfectly.
3.
Squatting: Always use a footstool (like a Squatty Potty) while eliminating. The modern toilet interrupts the anatomical function of Apana Vata.
Try This Today
If you feel a surge of panic or anxiety, place a warm water bottle or heating pad on your lower abdomen and drink a cup of hot fennel/cumin tea. By grounding the colon, you will instantly pull the chaotic energy out of your mind.
