Look at any incredibly healthy, vital older person, and you will almost always find a strict, non-negotiable morning routine. In Ayurveda, this daily routine is called Dinacharya, and it is considered more important than any herb you could take.
Dinacharya aligns our biological clocks with the circadian rhythms of the earth.
The Classical Steps
1. Wake in Brahma Muhurta: Ayurveda suggests waking about 90 minutes before sunrise (or at least by 6:00 AM). The environment is dominated by Vata (movement and ether) at this time, making it the easiest time to wake up feeling light and clear. If you sleep past 6:00 AM into the Kapha time of day, you will wake up feeling heavy, groggy, and sluggish.
2. Evacuation: The absolute first priority is clearing the bowels. Squatting, drinking warm water, and establishing the habit of morning elimination ensures that yesterday's waste does not get reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
3. Tongue Scraping (Jihwa Nirlekhana): Using a copper or stainless steel U-shaped scraper, gently scrape the tongue from back to front 5-7 times. This removes Ama (toxins) and stimulates the digestive organs.
4. Oil Pulling (Gandusha): Swishing a tablespoon of warm sesame or coconut oil in the mouth for 3-5 minutes pulls fat-soluble toxins from the oral mucosa and strengthens the gums and jaw.
5. Abhyanga (Self-Massage): Massaging the entire body with warm, cured sesame oil for 5 minutes before showering. This is the ultimate pacifier for Vata dosha, deeply nourishing the nervous system and lubricating the joints.
6. Movement and Meditation: 10-15 minutes of gentle movement (like Yoga Asana) to clear stagnation, followed by sitting in stillness to center the mind.
Try This Today: You don't need to do all six tomorrow. Start by simply buying a copper tongue scraper and committing to step number 3 every single morning.
