A perfect morning does not start when you wake up; it begins the evening prior.
Ratri Charya is the Ayurvedic nighttime routine designed to draw the senses inward, pacify Vata dosha, and prepare the mind for deep, restorative rest.
The Danger of the "Second Wind"
According to the Ayurvedic biological clock:
- 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM is Kapha time. The prevailing energy is earth and water—heavy, slow, and dull. This is nature’s biological window to feel sleepy.
- 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is Pitta time. The energy shifts to fire, as the liver begins its deep cellular cleanup and processing of the day's experiences.
*If you stay awake past 10:00 PM*, you enter the Pitta zone. You will experience a "second wind." You will suddenly feel hungry, alert, and capable of working or watching three more episodes of a TV show. You have missed the sleep train, and insomnia is guaranteed.
The Ideal Evening Protocol
6:00 PM to 7:00 PM: The Final Meal
Eat a light, warm dinner. Soups, cooked vegetables, and grains are best. Avoid heavy meats, raw salads, and cold drinks. Digesting a heavy meal while lying flat prevents the liver from doing its detox work.
8:00 PM: The Great Disconnect
Turn off all screens. The blue light from phones forcefully stimulates Pitta and aggravates the nervous system (Vata). Switch to warm, dim lighting in the house to signal to the pineal gland that the sun has set.
9:00 PM: Foot Massage (Padabhyanga)
Warm a teaspoon of sesame oil and massage it vigorously into the soles of your feet for 3 minutes. The feet are densely packed with nerve endings. Massaging them violently pulls the erratic Vata energy out of your busy head and grounds it down into the earth. Wipe off excess oil and put on socks.
9:30 PM: Golden Milk
Sip a small cup of warm milk boiled with nutmeg, cardamom, and a pinch of turmeric. This acts as a deeply nourishing, natural sedative.
10:00 PM: Lights Out
You must be asleep.
Try This Today: Tonight, commit to the 8:00 PM Screen Curfew. Wash your face, dim the lights, read a physical book, and notice how deeply the Kapha heaviness pulls you into sleep by 9:30 PM.
