Asthma and chronic respiratory allergies are often treated solely as lung problems. Ayurveda views them fundamentally as
digestive problems.
When your digestive fire (Agni) is weak, food is not processed properly. This creates a cold, sticky, toxic byproduct called Ama. This Ama mixes with Kapha dosha, travels upward, and settles in the weakest organ—often the lungs—causing congestion, wheezing, and asthma (Shwasa).
How to Strengthen the Respiratory System
1. Fix the Diet (Reduce Kapha)
If you have asthma or heavy chest congestion, you must completely eliminate dairy (especially cold milk and yogurt), bananas, and cold/iced drinks. These are all heavy, cold, and mucus-forming.
2. The Power of Pippali (Long Pepper)
Pippali is unique: it is heating and burns up toxins, but it also deeply rejuvenates the lung tissue. A classic remedy is taking 1/4 tsp of Pippali powder mixed with raw honey. The honey acts as a bio-carrier (Anupana), scraping the mucus from the channels.
3. Steam Inhalation (Swedana)
Boil water, add 2 crushed cloves, a pinch of turmeric, or a few drops of Eucalyptus oil. Tent a towel over your head and inhale the steam for 5 minutes. This immediately dilates the bronchioles and liquefies stuck Kapha.
4. Pranayama for Lung Capacity
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) balances the nervous system, while
Bhastrika (Bellows Breath) generates internal heat to clear the respiratory tracts. (Do not practice Bhastrika during an acute asthma attack).
Try This Today
Drink only warm or hot water for the next 3 days. Notice how much lighter your chest feels and how much less mucus you produce in the mornings.
