Ayurveda places unparalleled emphasis on
Agni, the biological fire that governs digestion, absorption, and assimilation. It is the intelligence that transforms apples and rice into human tissue, thoughts, and energy.
The State of Your Fire
When Agni is robust, you can occasionally eat heavy or incompatible foods, and the fire will simply burn them up, extracting the nutrients and discarding the waste perfectly. You feel light, energetic, and clear-headed after eating.
When Agni is weak, even the purest organic kale salad will sit in the stomach, undergo fermentation, and transform into a sticky, toxic sludge called Ama.
The Four Types of Agni
Your original constitution (Prakriti) heavily influences your typical digestive fire:
1. Sama Agni (Balanced): Digests food in 3-4 hours perfectly. No gas, no bloating, perfect daily elimination.
2. Visham Agni (Irregular/Vata): Unpredictable. Sometimes ravenous, sometimes entirely absent. Prone to bloating, gas, and constipation.
3. Tikshna Agni (Sharp/Pitta): Extremely intense. Can digest anything rapidly, but often burns too hot, causing acid reflux, loose stools, and hypoglycemia.
4.
Manda Agni (Slow/Kapha): Sluggish and heavy. Lack of appetite. Prone to weight gain, lethargy after meals, and mucus production.
How to Protect Your Flame
The fastest way to destroy Agni is by constantly snacking. Adding new food to half-digested food extinguishes the fire, like throwing wet logs onto a struggling campfire.
Try This Today: Eat three distinct meals. Leave a minimum of 4 hours between them. Do not eat a single bite of anything in between, allowing your Agni time to fully reset and burn bright.
